Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a procedurethat involves stimulating specific points on the body by inserting fine, sterile, metallic needles to relieve pain and to treat a variety of healthproblems.
How Does It Work?
According to the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi(Chinese term for energy) runs in specific meridians to drive blood flow, to nourish organs and tissues, to defend the body and to promote vitality. If a person‘s Qi is disturbed, his or her health will deteriorate. Acupuncture can regulate Qi and restore its circulation to normal status.
Modern medicine has no satisfactory explanation for how acupuncture works, however, numerous studies have demonstrated that acupuncture activates complex central neurohumoral mechanisms, increases brain blood flow and promotes tissue-healing processes.
Does Acupuncture Really Work?
Acupuncture has been successfully used as a therapeutic method in China for thousands years. Countless patients have benefited from it. As an alternative or complementary treatment, acupuncture is widely used today. Billions of dollars are spent in the United Sates for acupuncture treatments every year.
What Conditions Can Be Treated With Acupuncture?
Most medical conditions can be treated by acupuncture, however, it is particularly effective in the following conditions:
* Acute and chronic pain
* Sinusitis, sore throat, asthma, nbronchitis, asthma, bronchitis and allergies
* Nausea, vomiting, gastritis, constipation and other gastrointestinal ailments
* Addiction cases such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse and smoking
* Psychological disorders including stress, depression, anxiety, emotional conditions and neurotic symptoms
* Peripheral neuropathy and neurological rehabilitation, paralysis from stroke and other conditions
* Urinary problems, menstrual spasms and cramps, PMS
* Improve immune function and circulation. Promotion of overall health and well being
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
It depends. Some acute cases may require only 1-2 or several sessions while some chronic cases and addiction cases may require more frequent and longer treatment courses.
Does Acupuncture Have Side Effects?
As of now, no serious side effect has been associated with acupuncture provided by well-trained practitioners. The fine needles may cause small black and blue marks on the skin. They will disappear in days.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most patients do not feel the insertion of the very fine acupuncture needles. Some patients may feel a little prick, not unlike a mosquito bite, when a needle touches nerve endings.
When needles penetrate deeper into tissues, patients usually have special needle sensations, such as heaviness, numbness, soreness, distension and even electric shock. The presence of needle sensations suggests good response to the treatment.
What Responses to Treatment Will Occur?
Most patients with pain and/or tension feel relaxed and relieved during the treatment. Many patients may feel an increase in energy, lightness and buoyancy due to the stimulating effects of acupuncture. Speed of response to treatment varies considerably from patient to patient, and with each disease. There are four types of responses:
1. Immediate Response- patient notes immediate relief of symptoms following the first treatment
2. Cumulative Response-patient requires multiple treatments to realize beneficial relief
3. Delayed Response- patient notes reduction of symptoms up to two to three months after acupuncture treatments have stopped
4. Non Response-patient notes no change in symptoms
How Long Does Benefits Last?
Patients have reported the lasting effects of acupuncture to vary from months to years. If the symptoms reoccur, additional treatments may be necessary.
